I was beating up on my neighbour and agreed a truce where I would withdraw to the edge of a previous province that I liked to own. That is, I was allowing them to keep several regions that I already occupied. When they agreed, these regions were returned to their control, and my armies, at the doorstep of their capital were chucked out into foreign/enemy regions, and have a long and difficult way back to my own territory, which they will probably not survive.

I recommend that at the completion of a peace treaty, armies of both sides are returned to nearest friendly territory.

Same here, fully agree.

I believe sometimes it does happen that armies are returned to the nearest region, but it's certainly not consistent.
