Hi All,

Still trying to get a decent design for my Vikings and I've thought about the following:

What if I make a third rank of Huscarls 'Supporting Archers'. The idea being that they are pretty much going to be wasted points (at 6 points a pop), but it makes the 6 Huscarles that I DO have that much tougher by making their break point higher and making their hits per base higher.

I don't expect to do a whole lot with the shooting, BUT in the event the Huscarls are charged by mounted, then they do add a dice here or there which could make the difference.

It's interesting, because my gut tells me to use the supporting archers for the Freemen, and let the Huscarles go without, but thinking about it, I think the reverse is true.

I'll probably run the Freemen in 8's but with a frontage of 3, thus have the same effect with the Huscarles, but fill in the ranks when casualties come or have the ability to expand out to 4 when combat is appropriate.

Thoughts appreciated.

I think the Huscarls at 6 are worth the 18 points to make them 9 IF you have the spare points.

generally Off Spear don't need the LF for any other purpose than the one you suggest for bulking purpose.

In BGs of 8s I think bulking is not needed.

Yeah, that's pretty much the conclusion I came up with. My original design was to have them the same as the Huscarls, that way they would be in 9's, but I thought, the difference between 8's and 9's is nothing (in reality - maybe 4 hits give you a -, but rare to get that many from shooting). To get that bonus will cost 15 points. 2 extra spear cost 14 points and I have the flexibility of using them with a frontage of 3 or if needed a frontage of 4!
