The Northern Classic - Game 2 vs Eastern Han

Game 2 is against Dave Morrison using Eastern Han. Dave is fielding the Steppe version which is entirely cavalry. I think Dave’s army is 3 x TC, 1 x 4 LH Bow, 2 x 4 Unprotected Cav Bow, Sw – undrilled, 2 x 4 Prot Cav XB Sw, 4 x 6 Arm Cav LtSp Sw, 2 x 4 Arm Cav LtSp Sw and 1 x 4 Elite Arm Cav XB Sw. Dave has 12 BGs with a break point of 12. His initiative is +2 vs my +3 but he wins and we fight in Agricultural. We both have 800 AP.
A feature of the Han is that the Chinese cavalry can dismount as MF polearm and Dave elects to dismount all of the LtSp cavalry apart from 1 x 4 base BG. On reflection I think they should have stayed mounted. As I’d lost initiative and had to deploy first I broke my army up so that I could better react to what was coming. I was very unfamiliar with this list.
I moved first and this is the position after movement. The cavalry are at the back. The Superior Pike are flanked by Thracians to better protect the MF. The LH and LF sling are on my left to slow down Dave’s mounted wing. Everything else heads forwards as I can’t see too much threat from the dismounted MF.

This is Dave’s deployment. The Elites are on the flank with another XB BG. Then 3 x 6 MF foot with the LH in front. The remaining mounted LtSp Cav are flanked by a Tribacl Cav BG plus 2 more MF. Out of shot is a tribal Cav BG and the 2nd XB BG.

The Elites appear to be the main threat. Especially if they can get around the flank so I turn my Superior pikes to head their way. Everyone else plods forwards.

This is my delaying flank. Not a lot will happen over here.

The 2 main forces are rapidly closing and I can see that those nasty Elites could flank my pike so the Thessalians are dispatched to bolster that wing.

Battle is now joined as 2 x 6 Armd MF and the LtSp Cav charge the 2 Thracians BGs and my Companions. Dave’s MF are at a double minus charging shock mounted in the open mounted so I am quietly confident that this should go in my favour. Confidence increases when the 4 base Cav BG loses a base.

The Elites have almost turned the flank of my Superior Pike but the Thessalians are able to get into position to intercept and cancel the threatened flank charge.

Back in the centre and the Chinese cavalry auto break. The Chinese C-in-C is killed in the pursuit and suddenly the majority of Dave’s centre has evaporated. The Thessalians intercept the Elites and the POA for the LtSp sees the Elites disrupt and lose a base. This allows my Superior Pikes to focus on the MF.

My other pike are bearing down on the remaining MF who both drop at impact.

Shortly after that the Elites fragmented and Dave’s army went down in defeat. With no losses for the Macedonians we’re celebrating a 35-0 victory.
