Does this look familiar to you ?

This is an engraving made in 1694 showing the positioning of both armies before the battle of Rocroi (1643). I recommend to watch it in high resolution here (other resolutions : here) :

Here are some close-ups of the engraving :

It looks very much like a game we play and like, doesn't it ? ;-)

I guess the developers drew their inspiration from such engravings and pics.

What I really liked about this engraving are the small 'figurines' around the 'units' and their movements. Very lively and typical. IMHO they might give some ideas for the graphics and animations on the battlefield of a potential future P&S 2 (if ever...).

However, nice engraving, isn't it ? :-)

Somewhere way back in these threads RBS said they used greyscale unit models and terrain in the early alpha , but in the end they “colorized” it as to better match gamers expectations. Would have been cool to see what it looked like!

+1. Indeed. It would have been really nice.

I had almost asked on this forum whether a modder could make a kind of shader mod (like Gem fx for Total War) that'd turn P&S into an animated version of the engraving in OP. Then I said to myself : they'll think I'm crazy :-)

btw I also like FoG II with its pixel versions of painted scale figures of a tabletop game that'd be animated. Colorful. Very nice too.

I don't know which one I prefer.

What id really like to see is p&s units looking like old table top war games using 2 mm figures. Probably could get close to 1-1 ratio there. Save the artist fees for really nice unit cards and unit banner/flag art and persistent battle field smoke.

You mean motionless 3d models with nice poses like table top war game figures ? I thought of that option too. I've played the 18th mod of FoG 2 that actually shows still figures (without varied poses though). Really nice! But again maybe it wouldn't match some "gamers expectations" as you have pointed out ?

This kind of figures and landscapes in 3D would be very amazing :

I pitched the idea to Slitherine, but they werent keen, probably rightly. It was never actually implemented.

Yet that was an excellent idea.

a bit off-topic and off timeframe but...

For those who like figurines, the French Army Museum (Invalides, Paris) organizes an exhibition of about 40 wonderful lead miniatures of historical figures of the Napoleonic period (28 March - 21 June 2020). Scale : 1/30 (54 mm).

Websites in French but the pictures are worth taking a look at !
