I recently stopped using MS Vista after an argument with MS. I upgraded from XP to Vista in 2006 while beta testing it. I later upgraded to Ultimate. About 6 weeks ago my hard drive died. I installed Vista upgrade as a clean install, then after 30 days it went to reduced functionality(NO FUNCTIONALITY REALLY) and I tried to get MS to let me use my upgrade key. They actually wanted me to pay $200 buy a full version then upgrade. So I went to Linux.
My question is; Is there any way at all to play CEAW on Linux? I will never go back to Microsoft, so until I get the money to buy a Macintosh I will use Ubuntu. I have tried Wine and everything I can think of, all I accomplish is exhausting my number of installations allowed.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

We dont officially support it and dont have any test machines set up with it on so unless a player can offer some advice I'm not sure what we can do.

Hi!,
Yes there is a way to play on Ubuntu GNU/Linux, Fedora, or really any other GNU/Linux distribution. You can install the game using wine, and then use the Sun Java JRE to run the game. You need version 1.5 of the JRE though, other versions won't work. I did this last night so I am not sure what caveats there are but here is a screenshot of CEAW on my desktop...
The game only runs on Fast Play mode, and you need to use this command line:
java -Xms500m -Xmx900m CEAW
Actually, since the game is written in Java and does not make (as far as I can tell) use of platform specific overrides, it should be trivial to support (unofficially) GNU/Linux or any other Java enabled platform. Anyway, best of luck!

Thought I would chip in here as well. I've managed to get MH CEAW Gold running under Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex as well, using Wine and the Java that comes bundled with the game (meaning I can have whatever, if any, Java version installed on my system -- read: the newest one

). The only limitation so far is that I can only run it in a window and not full screen, although that would be my preferred choice either way. Installation worked flawlessly and the only 'trick' I had to use for getting the game running is to set it to run in a virtual desktop of a certain size (using winecfg.) I uploaded a short walkthrough to the Wine Application Database:
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... &iId=16090
It would be nice if other Linux users could upload their test data there as well, especially on different systems or with different methods. I would assume there is probably a way to get the game running also in full screen or in a bigger window, and if someone could figure this out then that's obviously even better. Til then, I'm enjoying my very well functioning MH CEAW just fine.
Which isn't to say I don't want to add my voice in support for Linux versions of this and future games. It's always a bit of a gamble to buy a Windows game with the intent of running it under Linux, knowing that you're not certain to be able to get it working straight away or even at all. With this game, it looked so good and very well suited for PBEM with a mate that I decided to chance it anyway, but everyone might not be so keen. Aside from that, keep up the good work.
