Necron Immortals seem awful. May need rebalancing.

Am 175 turns into Necron campaign on largest size map my computer can ran.
Making a point of trying out every unit in the game.
Necron Immortals just baffle me - I currently field 20ish Necron Warriors and 8 Immortals among my armies spread out wide across the map and what I don't understand is why was this unit made to be a nearly strictly inferior version of the Warriors?
Their damage output vs all targets is exactly the same as Necron Warriors when shooting from 2 hexes away without Rapid Fire. Meaning they are basically crappy Necron Warriors who have traded the ability to step into 1 hex range with the enemy to inflict double damage for a 2 point armor boost.
Negative 50% of their damage output for a 16% damage mitigation is not a good trade-off.
Especially baffling as their role seems to be intended to stay back and fire from behind the warriors where they are far less likely to be targeted.
This unit right now does not do justice to the lore and even when judged purely in context of the game, appears to be a balancing oversight.
If I missed something about this unit that justifies their current state, would appreciate an explanation.
