Able to flank charge or not

had the following come up in a game yesterday. 'A' is my cav BG of 4 bases in melee with '1' also a cav unit of 4 bases. To the side is a BG of legionaries (2).

Can the legionaires declare a charge on 'A' by advancing and wheeling? I believe it doesn't count as a true flank charge. Can someone confirm if they can still charge as 'A' is already in melee to its front.

2 has have at least on base behind the flank of A in order to legally charge into the flank of A. See pages 57 to 59. They can move into overlap during the manoeuvre phase. See pages 75 and 76.

No as stated it would only count as a normal charge, you need a complete base behind your enemies BG, mind as stated an overlap would have been better then in next manauver phase 2 could have done a 90% turn ready for a flank attack next go that is if the cavalry were still there and had not bounced off.

2 Cannot charge A at all.

All of A's bases are in combat so none are legal targets for a frontal charge. If 2 had bases completely behind the flank of A it could perform a flank charge. It does not tho.

As in the answer above it could advance to overlap. Or it could wait and move into flank charge postition. Charging in a later turn.

And even then only if the charge did not involve any wheel, as 2 is starting within 1 MU of A.
