Thoughts on the new patch...

I've been playing with Massalia and am currently on turn 290 and having a blast. I did try a few times to get going but failed miserably but on the fourth try I lucked out and the ignored me and spent ages knocking lumps out of each other whilst I crept slowly eastwards along the coast turtling up. I then picked up the odds and sods left after the Gauls finished their wars and an alliance with Rome helped. Somehow the Arverni accepted client status and I slowly assimilated them as I took over more and more of modern day France. Anyway I'm now into Africa after finally talking all of what is now Spain and southern Portugal and planning the big take down of Rome (who is still an ally!). Sorry will try and work out how to do/post a screenshot if people are interested.

Manpower has been a constant problem which I don't think would have been before the patch but I am absolutely swimming in cash due to great trade bonuses and I own all the Silver and Gold mines! The manpower problem has also been eased by also owning nearly every metal producing region in western Europe too so apart from a couple of rough decades during the mid-100's I've been chipping along nicely.

The one massive improvement for me are the battles. Now that the militia are relegated to the reserve line and cavalry are being used on the flanks things have got so much better - indeed getting caught on a plain by a more numerical enemy with cavalry can be a recipe for disaster, even if you have a qualitative edge. Although the placement of the troops in the battle line has improved a lot there are times when I've thought Id like to have switched units round (maybe this option will be considered in the future). In general though, hats off to the devs for listening to us punters and changing things for the better.

There is one thing that I would like to see change though is this: Stop reverting regions back to nations after 15 turns after a civil war, I just don't understand why this happens and is sort of immersion breaking for me. I can sort of understand it if the rebels end up with only one or two regions but when they have control of entire provinces it is sort of annoying to me. Twice Rome has had Civil Wars in my game and once one of the rebel factions ended up in control of the whole of Sicily, and another most of Greece and a province in Africa. I'd rather they stayed in play as the rebel faction or maybe become a new country - Sicilia for instance from the first example.

All in all I'm happy with the way this game is being improved, yes the Diplomacy needs work but we know that is being looked into and it augers well for the future of an already great game. Long may it continue.

The patch has added frustration for me. Losing manpower and metal every turn and having far flung objectives being set that make no strategic sense is preventing me from enjoying the game the way I used to before the patch. Damn, I really liked this game too.

1.05 will fix the issue on metal being removed wrongly from the stockpile. Also, some improvements on dynamic objectives.
