I have always liked ancients, i started playing WRG 5th edition ( along time ago). then moved onto 6th and built fantasy armies for my D&D campaign . Then 7th edition and finally DBM/DBF.

I never really got into DBM/DBF and switched to other periods...have you tried the "Wheres Charlie" nam rules?

When i heard of a new set of ancient rules which were more like 5th/6th /7th i wanted to try them out. As i now have no time to paint ( and i'm not very good). i bought from America for a prepainted Dungeons and Dragons Miniatures army. I did a few trades on a new trading website. ukminis.co.uk . They are a good bunch of guys. :)

I have played about 5 games , about 400 points a side.

My Army; 16 Ibixians axemen
16 Quaggoths axemen
16 Bullywugs spearmen
16 Kenku (birdmen) swordsmen
12 catfolk archers
12 Yuan Ti (snakemen) archers
12 Malison (snakemen) archers
8 Blackscale (snakemen) Big Axemen
8 Briaur Rangers (goat centaurs) light horse

It took me 7 weeks to get it all together. the fastest army i have put together in 30 years of wargaming.

It isn't all that effective, but its been okay for learning the rules.

I dont think ive played where's charlie but I have played charlie company (very good).

Thats the best way to learn though. Did you come up with the army lists yourself?

Its not really an army list, its just a collection of miniatures. And then i guessed the troops stats and used the points values from the rulebook.

Easy.

The Blacksale Lizardfolk are really big , about ogre size, so i count them as 4 standard models.
So a unit of 4 BL is really a 16 figure strong axeman unit.

With 2 BL on a 5" x 3" base counting as 8 normal HF axemen in a 2 deep formation.

Have you played much FoG ?

Yeah the rules are fairly good for coming up with your own stuff.

Ive played about 20-30 games of FOG but not any fantasy games yet. I donk think that the fantasy element would have a great impact unless you wanted to play in a high magic game.

We will probably equate Wizards to a double strength artillery stand,....or something like that.

I'm not that keen on a magic system that would change the game to much , but if someone comes up with something interesting , then i'm willing to try it out.

Do you have an historical army ?

Sorry for the late reply, work commitments and all.

I use 6mm and as they are fairly generic can make up most ancient armies.

What about yourself?

Also a good idea regarding the magical side of things.

Have a look at the" Ideas; general principles of magic mods design" thread .

To see some rules we playtested yesterday.

Just noticed the link didn't work , and fixed it.

What do think of our "quick and dirty" magic rules ?

No one came up with anything, so i took a shot at a starting position for a set of bolt on magic rules.

Any ideas ?

Thats normally the best way.

I nearly had my first game of semi fantasy FOG but we ended up playing a board game as we had 8 of us.

The game would have been Belisarius verus the Malwa empire using the novels for some interesting troops.
