I'm playing a single-player game as Epirus and I've clawed my way to 3rd place in the legacy table and have narrowed the lead of Rome down to 4,000 from 7,000 and I'm beginning to believe I just might be able to win without having to fight the beast that is Rome. However the latest turn has completely shocked me

Can anyone shed any light on what may have happened to change Rome's position so drastically in one year?

this Steam thread about a similar incident pointed to the cause being them absorbing another faction along with that faction's legacy points - I'm not sure through what means, as I'm not familiar with whatever game mechanic allows a faction to do that.

That would be the case, thanks for the explanation. It looks like I may have to fight the beast... and the beast just got a lot bigger!

if you have a client state, the option comes up to absorb them after a time
