I see a few VVV transfers in there.

What about the knotwork and the animal emblems (e.g. the boar on the mounted commander): where did you get them?

Nice job.

And thanks Dalauppror for a couple of ideas. Mine are slowly building up in a drawer.

Thanks ! :D

The knotwork are Little Big man transfers, from the Viking transfers and the animal emblems (e.g. the boar, wolf etc): are from old Games Workshop transfers (Bretonnians and Space Wolfs) 8)

Very nice work, Dal.

You know, it's a sad situation here. We can see that there is a large historical interest in Ancient British armies in FoG, and judging by the number of different miniatures companies that offer a version of ol' Boudicca in her scooter, the interest goes beyond FoG.

And yet we have been clearly warned by the designers that the Ancient British are not at all competitive in tournament play.

It's almost enough to make one wish the designers had compromised their principles a bit and "sexed it up" (to borrow a phrase from, uhh, Nik?) to make the Ancient British more competitive.

I could live with some compromise of historical verisimilitude...so long as the bowcases were right

IMHO the Ancient British list is plenty 'sexed up' already.

Hi,

I like the woad, so please don't take this as anything like a criticism, but I'm wondering how much woad the Ancient Brits used? I was under the impression that it was used much like tattooing, not a complete dye job of the body.

My reason for asking is that I too am building an Ancient British army (I didn't think there were two people in the world who liked losing at competitions :) ) so would want to 'copy' some of your ideas, but wasn't going to go to that level of woading.

Woad looks good. But to get an effective use I believe you need a lot of arsenic. Good for fanatics. You are going to die anyway.

Hi Ian

I dont think they used this much woad...but it look great on 15mm minis! :D I dont think I would paint 28mm like this, there I would try to go for the tattoing style.

Actually, my own (limited, amateurish) research has indicated that woad was a dye for cloth, and not suitable for use on skin. I'm not disputing that they painted their faces blue with something, just saying that the use of the word "wode" or "woad" for that skin paint is another popular misconception :)

What Gaius Iulius actually tells* us in De Bello Gallico is that the British dyed their skins with "vitrum". This might have been blue clay. Alternatively, a skin dye may have been extracted from Blackberries, in which case it was probably a purplish shade of blue. Or the dye may have been made from a type of blue-green grass common at the time (see "The Problem of the Woad" by Kym Ni Dhoireann.) It's also worth mentioning that our latin chum was talking exclusively about the Celts near Kent, and extrapolating that to all the peoples of the British Isles.

*"Omnes vero se Britanni vitro inficiunt, quod caeruleum efficit colorem."

Very nice figures. The blue, be it woad, clay, berries whatever :D is superbly done here. Wow.

Agreed... these are providing motivation for my own Medieval Irish project... not the same, I realize, but along the same realm, if you will.

I think Dalauppror probably used blue paint!

At Plymout the AB came 4th in the 25mm event so I wouldn't dismiss it entirely.

This may work better in 25mm but he went for lots of LCh, lots of LF & LH with just the elite MF. His hardest job was getting the balance of terrain right as lots helped the LF but too much prevent the LCh working well. They are also ideal for a flank marches, when his came on in one game it was a joy to behold as it worked to perfection.

Thanks Dal,

Thinking about it a little I just realised that the figures that I'm using ("Xyston Gauls") don't have much flesh showing at all, so I'm probably ok doing 'just faces' and the occasional 'full body' on the bare chested guys I do have.

For some reason my 'blue' is always my best shading, so I was kinda hoping there would be evidence out there of entire body woading :).

Oh well, half bodies and the occasional face it is :)

Dal,

Would you be able to post your army list? If you don't want to do that in public I understand. If you could e-mail it to me directly that would be good too. daisho1965 at hotmail.com.

I just want to get some ideas. My ideas have ended up with a very small army, but I have gone with 10 base BG's with the theory that you have to have bulk to address the problem of being medium foot and to limit the effect of shooting.

I'm also a Chariot whore so I've gone with lots of chariots.

I'm also a javelin Light Horse whore so I've gone with lots of Light Horse.

Doesn't leave many points :)

Your thoughts and theories would be appreciated.

I don't believe you need worry about shooting, your warriors are protected and you have plenty of cheap LF sling you can stand in front of them. A very important part of the army.
