Base removal and POA

Look at this situation:
BBB
BBB
AAA
AA
A is a BG of Spearmen. A receive a casualty. Possible solutions for base removal are:
_1_____2
BBB___BBB
BBB___BBB
AA____AAA
AA_____A_
With both solutions A will have 4 dice in next melee, but with solution 1, since they are Spearmen, they get a POA+ on all dice, with solution 2 they get POA+ on 2 dice and no POA on the other 2. Are both solutions legal?

I believe only the second is legal as casualties are removed from the front rank and replaced with a base from the rear ranks, if there are any.

Phil is correct, losses are taken from the front rank but MUST if possible be replaced by a rear rank base.

Keep in mind that I agree that solution 2 is the right one, but sometime also between historical players like us could arise the will to get an advantage even if we know that is not historically correct, trying to go around the rules. You say that situation 2 is right and 1 is wrong because "All vacated front rank close combat positions (except overlap) must be filled if battle group has any bases available to do so"? (p. 116 after the bullet list).
Mario.

Mario.
If you also bear in mind that the front rank base that is removed must be one that is facing the enemy BG that inflicted the most hits you can't actually remove a front rank base in overlap anyway.
The rule is IMO quite clear and the intention is that formations like spear and pike that rely on depth for their POAs will suffer in POA terms as they lose bases.
