Question on Combat Power etc

Hi, after building up a Saba army to take on their Arab enemies, I thought I'd got a good potential match-up together. The generals are of the same quality, the number of units is roughly similar, but my 'combat power' is 215 to the enemy's 89. However, when it comes to resolving the battle I lose every time (I've run it six or seven times, invariably with a losing result). When I tried translating it to the FoG battlefield to see what might be happening, I found that the likely reason was that all my troops were either Below Average or Somewhat Disheartened, and many of the enemy units were Above Average or Superior. This is despite the fact that my troops have been resting in a garrison town for several turns, and the enemy has just popped up after being wiped out as a faction a few turns back. So I'm wondering what it is that I haven't understood about the match-up? Any help gratefully received!
Thanks,
Bombax.

combat power overestimates xp lvl units, and have NO impact from army compositon
so if you have only heavy infantry - you have a lot of combat power, but you can lose for regular infantry + skirmishers

Check the terrain of the region where the battle will happen. What is the defensiveness and frontage? Would any of your units suffer a disadvantage in the terrain type? You need a line of melee units, like heavy infantry, equal to the frontage supported by an equal number of skirmisher/light cavalry types. What do you mean by "The generals are of the same quality,"? You are attacking, so the first number (Offense) of your General should be at least equal to the enemy General's second number (Defense). Ideally, you want a better Offense number plus abilities that aid your attack. Experience of the units matters, too. I've watched a lot of videos for the game and few to none of the players actually do a recon of the enemy force. Know your foe. Win the battle first and then fight it. Good luck!
