Hi
I bought the first DVD pack from Star Trek: The Next Generation. It was (one of my) Xmas present for my girlfriend, she's a ST freak. She wanted me to watch the DVDs with her, so I watched the first episode and didn't like it. Same with second episode (I must say I never liked the ST films and It was boring).
But then I became gradually interested with the whole thing. Look at these guys!!! They won't start firing their phasers at will, they'd rather talk!!! the idea was intriguing. Each character in the series had something about: data was great, Picard too...I started liking Deanna Troi too !!!!!(which is freaky even for a ST freak).
I don't care if the plots are lame or the outdated special effetcs, the idea behind it is great. They don't rush the space looking for resources and using the force (not the Force) to get them, they don't want to get (aka steal) some new technology from the more advanced races, they just want to make contact!!!!!!!!!!! I know it is naive and sort of hippy-like, but I like it.
Then I started reading about all the ST mithology and I found it really interesting. It's complex and great, not same quality as Tolkien's, but better (IMHO) than George Lucas' Star The Question is: Anyone else interested in Star Trek out there? We can talk about it HERE. You can even bash the series.
P.S: I still like the first Star Wars trilogy, but....

LOL
STNG was good, I learned to like it.
But the original Star Trek, with good ol' James Tiberius Kirk, was what I grew up on.
For me, the point where I reconciled the two was seeing the movie ST:Generations, with both captains. Somehow, after that, STNG worked for me =)
And you can keep Troi, give me the good doctor anyday, RRRRRROWF!

Crusheeeeeer..........
Yeah, Crusher has something too

...
I've recently bought the three TOS packs: I absolutely LOVE them. I don't care about the low-budget FX or the sixties'm look. They're in par with the best episodes from TNG. I'm thinking now about getting Voyager and give Kathleen Janeway (sic) a try: I'm watching one episode per night, so I won't expect TOS DVDs to last long...

In my opinion, the best of the various Trek Series was Deep Space 9. DS9 had a much larger cast of continuing characters than the other Trek series, since it wasn't limited to the crew of a single ship. The producers defied the conventional hollywood wisdom of producing one off, self contained episodes and instead developed a number of lengthy story arcs, many of which developed over years. I especially loved the Feringi bartender, Quark, whose naked greed was a refreshing departure from the usual Trek character's somewhat excessive politically correct goodness.

I agree with dhanegan, DS9 was definately the best of the Star Treks!
Me, I'm a somewhat recent convert to "Trekkie-ism". I grew up with Star Wars and it was the only Sci-Fi I'd watch. I always thought Star Trek was rather dumb, so I never bothered to watch it. Then one day in 2002, I was bored and wanted to buy a new PC game, but there was nothing really good available at my local game store. Then I saw "Star Trek: Armada" and said, "What the heck. It'll be dumb, but it'll give me somethin' to do." So I bought it... and had a blast! Suddenly, I wanted to see all I could of Star Trek, because if the PC game is this good, the TV shows must be better! I soon fell in love with TNG. Data was always my favorite character, and I thought Geordi was pretty cool, too. Then I found TOS. Even better! Graphics don't matter to me, its story that counts, so I fell even deeper in love with TOS than I had with TNG. McCoy was my favorite in that one, "Damn it, Jim! I'm a doctor, not an engineer!" But then, in 2005, enter the first DS9 episode I had ever seen. Suddenly, I had found the first TV show ever that I could watch for 6 hours straight and not get bored (I actually did watch DS9 for 6 hours straight once. It was a video tape, no commercials, just 6 straight hours of DS9.), and I fell in love with the whole show, the whole cast, the whole story, everything! There are very few DS9 episodes that bore me, only 3 that I can think of at the moment. All the rest are great! I even recorded my favorite episodes on 6 video tapes, so I could watch them whenever I wanted. Then I saw Voyager, big disappointment. Voyager really bored me, there's a small number of Voyager episodes I can watch, but most of them bore me. Then there's Enterprise... just thinking of that show makes me gag! In my opinion, "Star Trek: Enterprise" is a heresy to Star Trek. There is only one word I can use to describe it... ANATHEMA!
In short, I'm a huge Trekkie.
My favorite TOS episode: The Cage
My favorite TNG episode: The Best of Both Worlds (parts 1 & 2)
My favorite DS9 episode: Past Tense (parts 1 & 2)
My favorite Star Trek Race: The Cardassians
My favorite Star Trek Quote: "I will apologize for this at a later time." (Worf to Morn right before he throws Morn out of a chair)
My favorite Star Trek Series: DS9
My favorite Star Trek Character (from the Federation): Doctor Bashir
My favorite Star Trek Character (from outside the Federation): Garak

Heheh, my favorite original ST episode, hard to say. For about 2 years, it was part of my regular after-work routine to stop at my buddy's house for an hour, to burn rope and watch two shows - Star Trek and (cringe) Gilligan's Island
Two of my favorites were "The Trouble with Tribbles", and that one where Kirk has to duel the green lizard-like captain of that alien ship. The one where he winds up killing the alien with a crude hand-held bamboo blackpowder cannon he McGyver'ed together.
As far my favorite STNG episode, I don't know the name, but it's that multi-part episode where Picard gets captured by the Borg, and they have to rescue him. Among the things I liked about that story was the sense of desperate loyalty that Riker projected, in such contrast to his usual casual playboy routine. TBH, I found him far more likeable that way.
ALTHOUGH, that episode in which the Ferengi kidnapped Troi's mother was pretty damn cool. Worf's delighted eagerness to blow away the Ferengi ship there at the climax of the action was quite amusing, "Yes, captain....YES, Captain!!"

Them were two more good episodes!

That would be "The Best of Both Worlds parts 1 & 2"... quite a coincidence that we have the same favorite episode!

(shivers) That one was just weird!

1.) My favourite TOS episodes are the ones involving romulans

, don't remember their titles (the one with the female romular captain is GREAT)
BTW, I have just finished TOS third season and it's crap comparing with the other two
2.) The Picard-Borg episode is EXCELLENT! Stunning!
3.) We're watching Voyager Season 2 right now, it seems weaker that Season 1...Anyway, TNG is way better than VOY.

Aye, those are good episodes! Romulans are my second favorite non-human race, beaten only by the Cardassians!

Methinks the key word here is "comparing"... True, season 3 wasn't as good as 1 & 2, but its still better than most TV shows' I've ever seen.

Couldn't have said it any better myself!

Yes, TNG is better than VGR. But nothing can top DS9!

Yeah, the female romulans were...intriguing.
For some damned reason they always reminded me of the evil females from the series "V"
