I have been in contact with the organisers of the Derby Worlds competition to be held at Derby University. They want to hold a FoG competition but are unsure of the style. The usual format of this competition was to have teams of 3 players all using the same army list books. They think this might be modified to cover themed periods. They also want to have one of the periods in 25mm and that to be for late armies to attract the current 25mm Renaissance players.
I personally thought that the latter would present a problem. 25mm players tend to members of a couple of clubs - 25mm players attract other 25mm players.
Please contribute to this as I shall point the organisers to this forum.

In the past for DBM there have been three pools but never with army list restrictions. Three themed pools might be interesting. As for 25mm I really don't know.

As a matter of interest are there actually any team tournaments at Derby any more? Last year I thought it was all individual stuff.

IMO themed pools would work fine.

A 25mm pool, however, may well have to be open. My impression is that 25mm players have less armies than 15mm ones - onvious economic and time painting issues - and whilst these tend to be classical or medieval a number of players may have only one "period" of armies. With inherantly less 25mm players than 15mm ones this may rather inhibit the number who can participate.

I have to say as well that I was not aware that there was a significant number of 25mm Ren players - let alone a significant number who would be happy playing ancients/medieval They need to bear in mind that of the Ren armies only the very very early ones translate back inot late FoG ones - a limiting factor.

Overall, if asked, my advice to Derby would be to get a strong 15mm comp going and next year look to 25mm.

In recent years the non 6th Edition 25mm competition has been hidden away in side rooms away from the main areas.

The last time we entered as a team, we had to cancel as only two teams entered and had it not been for me emailing to ask the situation they would have changed it to a singles comp without telling us. This would have resulted in me paying to stay in a hotel for two nights to possibly play someone from my own club.

Prizes in the past have been rubbish and certainly not worth winning.

I am much happier with the BHGS competions, where the prizes certainly are worth winning.

So no support from here.

I haven't been for a few years now but when I did, alas, it did seem that the DBx-ers (what I was playing then) were not really wanted other than as bodies to make the competition large

However, I have a feeling that the organisers have changed (same club different people) and it may be that attitudes have as well. If they run FoG this year I'd be willing to give them a (last) chance.

I have to admit to having soldiered on with the Derby tournament far longer than I really should as it was never really an event or format I liked. When they threw the DBMers out at short notice then came begging the following year and dumped us in the towerblock out of the way that was the last straw. Two years ago I wasn't playing DBM much and there was no attraction to me to play but I did go to shop. Last year I could have gone and played Flames of War but I really didn't want to because of my overall opinion of the event being so poor. I didn't even go to shop last year.

If there is a FoG comp this year and I have a team I might consider it but overall, for me at least the Derby "World" Teams has got a lot of bad stuff to make up for.

I played another set of rules there last year. The prizes have certainly got better, but there is definitely still a bias towards 25mm 6th Edition.

The people organising seemed the same people to me.

Lets try and get this competition back on it's feet. It would be jolly good to have another comp later in the year and I'm not just saying that becasue I live 15 miles up the road!
Seriously what do people want - 3 teams all 15mm each in a themed pool?
800 points or even less for quick games?
Constructive suggestions for making this a bit different

Single open 800 points hows that for short don't know about constructure!

A team event will in itself be different from anything other than Campaign - although gods know what their periods are going to be as there is nothing on their web site ...

IMO themed pools are a good thing.

A team event is OK but personally I really dislike the draw based on the sum of the team scores because I think it encourages negative play. Lots of other people like that draw mechanism so I don't see it changing.

It would be nice if the games were a bit shorter so that there was a better chance to look round the show. How about 700 points on a 5 foot wide table or something like that?

Less than 800 points would not interest me other than for a 3 games in a day one day comp which is, IMO, their forte.

Best of luck with this Bob - but I won't be going this year because:

Too many bad experiences previously
Too far for just 4 games
Poor prizes
Poor organisation
Too close to Warfare whose trade show is now superior

But will keep an open mind if others trail blazers tell me what a great event I missed out on - I did enjoy the pub with attached curry house.

Ta - couldn't find that when I looked (my excuse is it was late when I looked).

As an aside it'd have been nice, as somebody who supported this event (other than last year) from its relaunch, to have been sent this information - unless of course it went to Hammy and he didn't pass it on ...

Now had a look - rather unimaginative set of periods IMO Will still go as it is a different type of comp and has always been fun - unlike Hammy I like the fact there are different incentives within the team structure.

Just seen the flyer for this among the rules are Renaissance Fields of Glory in 25mm? are there new rules out then.

Also 15mm FOG are there any people going is it worth entering not having been in the past as a player.

The web site says

25mm FOG Ancients -Details to be finalised - Early Renaissance & High Medieval. Individual competition.

So the rules are the ancients/medival ones.

I don't know what the format is for 15mm FoG, I don't know who is organising it and I don't know if there will be a MAWS contingent going.

It is possible that a bunch of us will go. Last year a few people played in the FoW comp and Dave Ruddock IIRC played DBMM.

Indeed I did. And am also playing this year...

There were two from MAWS who played FoW - Martin and Jimmy IIRC. Jeff D also played in some 25mm Warhammer thingy as well.
