Design notes for Ethandun 878 AD

I have chosen to depict the Anglo-Saxon army as all being on foot . . .

"he attacked the whole pagan army fighting ferociously in dense order, and by divine will eventually won the victory, made great slaughter among them, and pursued them to their fortress (at Chippenham)"
from Asser's “Life of King Alfred”

I have also made the Anglo-Saxon army a bit larger than the Viking force, 1446 army points to 1288. The Hampshire contingent is smaller than the other two because only the western part of the county was mobilised for the battle.

The historical outcome of the battle was a victory for Alfred and the West Saxons. Shortly after the battle, the peace treaty of Wedmore was agreed and Guthrum was baptised as a Christian before moving off to East Anglia.

The banners were provided by Paul59.
