Elo Rating similiar to chess for multiplayer

I'm new to multiplayer and one thing that I thought might be useful would be a rating system that players can use to find opponents of equal ability. I can't imagine it would be hard to implement. Many historical battles may be unsuitable for ratings, but randomly generated skirmishes should work. Thoughts?
Also, anyone care for a game?

Pop over to the digital league - we are all grouped into divisions here and fight similar abilities. After a while you will know whos who in the zoo.
