No, you can only assign AI commanders to units that are deployed or in the reserve (undeployed) list.

...and the AI use this units and deploy them from the reserve pool ?
Thank you Eric !

The AI won't deploy units, but you can script it.
So instead of spawning reinforcements, you may create AI units, undeploy them, assign commanders and deploy them later.

Create unit
Undeploy unit
Use Unlock Commander to assign to unit

Use ie Condition Check Turn and Effect Deploy Unit to put onto map with commander assigned

Edit: the forum messes up the attachments again...

Select a unit on-map or in the deployed tab of the unit list, then click on the top of the unit list (the blank slot above the unit in the screenshot.
This slot has a small header 'Undeploy Unit'

Thanks - now it works !
But its really bad - that we cant erase commanders (use them for nocore units) or upgrade them.

You can remove a commander from a unit, hit ' i ' to open the unit info and remove the commander from there.
And I think you can assign to a non-core units as well.

I know that ! Thanks ! But you cant erase commanders for noncore units from scenario to scenario - they are every time available in an campaign !
Also it would be nice to upgrade them - same name but higher command level. Would be nice to have some new trigger to do that....

Sadly, the time still hasn’t come yet for commanders to go forever:

The only way to prevent taking added commanders on your side along is to create alliances under AI control with them, like it is done in the U.S. Pacific scenario Marshalls-Gilberts Raid.
An allied AI fighting besides own units is always interesting to watch.
Or, is Orde Wingate actually removed from the Burma campaign if you don't destroy the 2 aircraft in Ops Longcloth? I need to check that again.
PS: ah, I think I got it: as long as the faction doesn't belong to the player-core, commanders unlocked to foreign factions aren't taken along the next campaign mission.
E.g. in Burma, you only have the Britain faction, but Orde Wingate is spawned on British India under player control.

Thanks Horst to clear that !
Hopefully the developers not only talk about things and do this trigger effect with the next fix.

You were too fast, mate!
Check out my edited post again how to prevent unlocked commanders being taken along campaigns. You just have to add a core-foreign faction for them. For the US, it's always easy because of "US Army" and "Red USA". It gets more complicated with other faction-cores. The Kriegsmarine is often a favored aux-faction for Germany.
PS: just checked Marshalls-Gilberts Raid again: the aux commander is also unlocked on a US Army ship to prevent permanent recruitment.
