Im wanting to learn the rules with friends. So I was wondering what would be a good small point size that would work. Something that would be inexpensive and paint up fast. 400? less? What would you recomend?

Ive thought about learning at tournaments (played at one with proxyed figs) but Im just not liking the tourny scene for several reasons:

1. it takes too long. I dont want to buy a hotel room, pay to get in a convention and then spend all my time in a 4 round, 800 point FOG tourny

2. those guys are hardcore. Nothing wrong with that, just not for me.

Personally go for one of starter Medieval armies. My English 100 Years War at 650 points only has 8 BGs in it. It is easy to paint and there is web site that I can down the banners and flags to print out. These banners and flags are also great for shield designs as well. These medieval have one of the best abilities to morph in to other armies.

We had a day at the club where we played 400 points on half size tables.

Great way to learn the rules- less maneuver, more action, less troops to worry about :D

I dunno.. Me and a friend back and March put together 650 points each.. We read the rules before hand, when we got together walked through everything and looked up rules as we played(first time playing)... It went very slow.. But in the long run helped us for future games... We took about 5 hours. I found that very educational.. And i will use this in learning future rules sets. Later when we played other people that were new to the rules.. We found ourselves a little more informed on the rules, since we did that. :D

The starter armies are all 600 points, I would aim for that to start with.

In Empires of the Dragon there are Japanese starter lists. You'll have to be patient until release.
