Generals and autobreak

Fighting western dominate Romans vs C12th Syrians last night, we could not find what happens to a general on autobreak. In this case the Roman general was in the front rank when the unit of equites he was with broke – was he killed, captured, carried away in the rout or left a rout move towards his base line on his ownsome? What happens to a general commanding from behind on autobreak?

Thanks

David

An auto broken unit still routs at the end of that phase and he goes with it and the unit is removed after the second rout, in the JAP IIRC. The same with a general attached behind, not fighting. If it is killed to a man (base) during the phase thats a bit of a conundrum tho. Would he get to rout as just a commander, moving at fastest speed in that terrain. Good question.

Hi, I think the commander can move away from the Autobreak BG in the JAP before the BG is removed. Have a look at the Full Turn Sequence,JAP section.
If he is on his own(either operating separetly or his BG just got destroyed) & he is in contact with an enemy base, he moves to a friendly BG within his movement range(p50) That's the way we played it the other week end - hope it's of some help.

The problem here is that a general with a BG that is destroyed completely, lost all its bases, before the JAP has a greater chance of survival than a general with a BG that routs, providing there is a friendly BG within his move distance. e.g. A 2 base BG loses a base at impact and a base in melee. Could be just one hit each time. He then moves to the nearest friendly BG instead of routing with the destroyed BG, because it isn't there. Not going to happen often, but it will.
