Last night two bgs of 4 stand contacted each other like this -

We fought 1 stand versus the other in impact - 2 dice each etc....
Then we fought the melee .... with each an overlap 4 dice vs 4.
Reading the bible again - it looks like you should line up or something
errr - were we supposed to move into this during the manouevre
phase - [][] and fight the melee like this.

Or should we have stayed like this - [][]
[][] and fought as overlaps
during melee - which we did

Oh dear i meant the first one to be offset - one
contacting the other with an overlap on each side
and then the alternative was they line up 0pposite
each other.
I thought they stayed with the overlap either side
for the melee phase or do they line up during the
manoevre phase for the melee.

If the contact was only one base each then the lineup would almost certainly end up with only one base on each side in 'combat' and the others fighting as overlaps.

The slide to line up is by the minimum required to get at least one base lined up, not the whole BG lined up.
