Multiple Melees in a turn

I have seen replays where one of my units has more than one melee with the same enemy unit. I am not referring to a charge but after they have been involved in melee combat for a turn or more. In these situations I did not melee in my turn so my assumption is that when I don't, the program initiates a melee before the other player decides whether he wants to melee in his turn. Is my assumption correct? If not, is a multiple melee with the same enemy unit random? Thanks.

Your first assumption is correct.

Units in close combat always melee every turn. If you don't activate a melee yourself, the game will activate it automatically at the end of your turn. This is not in fact part of the AI turn, even though by that time the game shows it as such.

Then of course the melee will be activated again at the end of the AI turn.

Actually, I don't play against the AI, only PBEM. What I saw in the replay was one of my cavalry units being meleed twice by each enemy cavalry unit that was already involved with it in close combat. As my opponent could only melee my cavalry unit once during his turn, the automatic activation of a melee is obviously why there was two. I did not initiate a melee in my turn so the tactic of trying to minimize losses by not initiating a melee in my turn doesn't work because the program will initiate for all situations where the human player does not do so.

That is correct. There is no such tactic. You can't avoid a melee being resolved (except by routing the enemy with another unit).

It doesn't matter if you are playing the AI or MP, an ongoing melee always has to be resolved every turn.

You have the choice of what order to resolve the melees, it is often a good tactic to resolve the melees that are most favourable to you first, and leave the ones you are more likely to lose until later. But you cannot choose to not resolve a melee at all! If you do not resolve it manually, the program resolves it for you, and as this occurs after you have clicked to end the turn, it looks like this is occurring in the opponents turn, but it is not.
