Not quite sure why you've gone for the ally as it doesn't give you any troops you can't get anyway - other than saving 10 points on the general.

IT WAS HIM OR THE BYZANTINE AND I LIKED HAVING THE EXTRA BG OF DEF SPEARMEN

Ah, I hadn't noticed that you'd already used up all the spearmen (might have helped if I'd looked at the list

)
I might actually be tempted to see if I could make the allied infantry BG up to 12 to really maximise the benefit of the general in combat.

In an open comp your spear will struggle being both Protected and average in any stand up fight..(Last Monday at the club I broke a 8 base BG of Defensive Armoured spear by shooting it disrupted and charged it frontly with 2 BG of 4 base Cav Superior Bow/sword just to show protected could be weak in an open fight)
Your best troops are the Cav Superior Lancers and the next best is the LH Lancers, what I would do is take the least spear you can get away with make them poor stick them by your camp. Drop the allies take three or four BG light infantry bow/javilins and as many of the Lancers both Cav/LH as you can take.
I have used average before in comps and come unstuck many a time but these are just my thoughts.

An alternative suggestion and one I have found very successful vs a Knight army, field 2 BGs of 12 poor defensive spear/lt archers. They are super cheap and cover 8 base width of frontage.
Set the spear up in the center, it forces the opponent to commit troops to cover them, as generally the other side will only have much more expensive troops. This will mean you will have an advantage on the flanks.
Initially put your 4 generals on the flanks to double move both flanks. By slowly moving up your center (poor spear) your opponent wont be able to move troops to deal with your flank attacks.
