Thematic base removal

Bases lost are removed form the front rank and replaced by those from a rear rank. Most of the time this will not matter. However if a unit of Byzantine skutatoi, 4 ranks deep, DefSp/DefSp/MFBow/DefSp loses a base can it replace the lost base from the very back so it still keeps its spear POA, becoming DefSp/DefSp/MFBow or does one of the MF bow have to move Forward, becomin DefSp/MFBow/DefSp?
Also if a mixed unit, HF/MF, has lost a base and a MF is now in the front, if it then loses a combat to mounted or HF does it count as MF for the CT? What if the MF are only in an overlap position when it loses to Mounted or HF.

Well the overlap one is easy as that is the feeding bases into combat solution.
I do not think you can pull the 4th rank to the 1st spot in the other situation but I will check onthe rule.

I'm not asking if it can be done. I'm asking, when they lose a combat v's Mtd or HF, is the BG is treated as MF

"All vacated front rank close combat fighting positions (except overlaps) must be filled if the battle group has any bases available to do so. Non-front rank bases must be used if any are available,
and can be from any part of the battle group."
So yes, you can replace the lost front rank base with the 4th rank base.

" Mixed battle groups of medium and heavy foot test as if entirely heavy."

Thanks Richard. I'd read the rules if this wasn't here. What a lazy age we live in. But then if this wasn't here there would be a lot more 'discussion' during games. See you at Usk.
