Base scale and board sizes

Hi all,
I've been considering taking the plunge and purchasing a couple of 6mm armies. I'm left with a dilemma: do I base them to 15mm (40mm frontage) or 25mm (60mm frontage) scale? 25mm would certainly look more spectacular, but will I run into space issues?
Does anyone have any insight into the difference in board size necessary for the two scales? How big would you suggest a battlefield should be, for say 800 point armies at both scales? Do the larger bases start to get unwieldy on the board sizes suggested in the book (6' by 4')?
Thanks for any comments.

800 points on a 6 by 4 is cramped for 25mm base sizes. The comp at Roll Call was 800 points on 8 by 4 for 25mm and that seemed to work pretty well.
650 points of 25mm on a 6 by 4 table makes for a good game IMO.

Oh dear-Here I go disagreeing with the mods on my first post
In my mind 650 points in 25mm on a 6` x 4` table is by visual perception no means a wargame, It`s a skirmish.
Hannibal you seem to want to view your figures whilst playing so forget 6mm unless you have the eyes of a Hawk.
15mm on a 6` x 4` table will give you a decent balance between ground/figure and base scales. <--- This is always the problem with wargaming so identify what your criteria are first.
If you want to see your lovely painting then do 25/28mm figures, But you will run out of room on a 6` x 4` so to go to the other extreme and you run 6mm figures that you cannot see (If your my age) then they can run around all day and never find a melee. 15mm works fine on a 6` x 4`.
So inside your question is to put smaller scales on larger bases---------Try one unit because it looks awful!!!! Of course you can lower the figure to man ratio and mess with that but if you go to a club you will be out of scale and look odd.
So as a final piece of advice-----------15mm on a 6` x 4` with these rules looks and feels fine 6mm on these rules will look awful unless you change your figure to man ratio and that leaves you being the only person in your area that you can fight without looking like David to his Goliath.
Dare I say this that I think FOG was written with 15mm in mind so bear in mind that your perception of what you are doing is actually going to change beyond reason in my mind by adopting a smaller scale figure. If you want to do 6mm look at Warmaster rules.
Well that is my 2 groats worth. And I have not even played a FOG game yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nitey nite--Being about the only Brit still up at 4.20AM.

Your problem will be that you will have no one to play against. Alright if you can buy all the armies you want to play. I would stick with 40mm frontage base sizes as do other 6mm players.
Also the 40mm and 60mm frontages make for different games, unless you up your MU size with the base size.

Page that could help you to choose
http://fanaticus.org/DBA/armiesofthefan ... index.html (6mm based on 15mm bases)
http://fanaticus.org/DBA/armiesofthefan ... index.html (6mm based on 25mm bases)
My choice for a DBA army would be 25mm bases as there's only a few bases to paint.
But for a FOG army, 25mm bases make too much miniatures to paint so I would choose 15mm bases.

I use 6mm on 15mm bases. I have quite a few opponents to play against even though most of the FOG players in my area are 15mm gamers. The 25mm gamers in my area have stuck with another rule set.
http://folk.uio.no/arnsteio/DBM/
has quite a few photos showing what can be done with 6mm - see the dbx in 6mm link.
He has also used his 6mm armies in 15mm competitions - see minicon 2003 for the better pictures
If you use the base sizes in appendix 1 you should be able to fit 4 infantry or cavalry figures for each 15mm figure, twice as many ranks and files, and up to two
elephants or light chariots for each 15mm elephant or light chariot.

I've painted lots of 25mm models in my time; it's the idea of epic armies that excites me about trying 6mm. Whole battles that look a
little bit less like skirmishes, rather than a few great individual models!
Thanks for all the comments guys.
