Zero Base Core

My assumption was that any unit classified as "Core" was required to be taken in the listed amount, but every now and again I see lists with Core choices listed as being a minimum of "0".

ex. - Storm of Arrows, Later Granadine, pg. 85, "Mounted Crossbowmen, Bases per BG 4-6, Total Bases 0-6"

Is that correct? Or is that a typo and you're actually required to take 4-6 bases?

Core does not necessarily mean you must take any, as in the case you mention.

Can anyone tell me what it does mean then? The other type of troops is "Optional", which would seem to imply that Core Troops are not optional. The vast majority of situations when a list says "0-#" it is in relation to a troop type that has options, such as being heavily armored or merely armored. I took that to mean that you must take one of the other, but not necessarily both. There are only a couple places where I see an example like I mentioned above where a Core Unit is listed as being not necessary and with no options.

It doesn't have any enforced meaning. It just indicates which are the typical forces present in most armies fielded by the nation. For those who want to field a typical force rather than a game-optimised one.
