Making FF

I'm making up some field fortifications by cutting up toothpicks then sticking them epoxy putty.. Question is.. I was looking at using 40x15.. But it just seemed too small.. So i was looking at using 40x20.. Also im up to better sugestions on how to make these. I don't rem seeing on what bases the FF should be on. Cheers!

I have my field fortifications on 40 by 20 and the stakes for my longbowmen on 40 by 10.
There is no specific depth requirement for fortifications.

If you base them on 40 x 20 you can also use them to represent a fortified camp. Put 8 of them round a 40 x 80 baggage base (2 DBM baggage elements) to make an 80 x 120 fortified camp.

There is no specific depth requirement for fortifications.
I never like to contradict you Hammy - but page 126 - depth of fortifications should be 15mm.
Having said that my PO's are 20mm deep and no-one has ever objected.

Just because my FFs and POs are 20 and 10mm respectively doesn't mean that I actually read the rules about them
The FFs I got with a second hand army and the POs I made that size because I had a load of 10mm deep bases that I had no need for aftre the demise of DBM and my plans for Bw(I) to Hd(O) conversion bases for my Assyrians.

Using toothpicks to represent palisaded field fortifications seems the way to go for me--anyone use something else for Roman style FF?

Wooden kebab sticks. They're a bit thicker than tooth picks. More of a tree diameter size in 15mm. Tooth picks being more like thick branches.

I have and use 20 by 80mm plastic bases with 3/4 tooth pic halfs in each of the 80mm long bases. I know, they do not "look like" what Roman soldiers would assemble nightly while on the march.
Just had a thought!!! (NOW, my head hurts)......There are all scales of barrels and packing cases made of plastic and or metal. If you have a model railroaders supply store near you....look there for barrels etc.
THOSE can be used to mark the "walls" of a camp, well, a non-Roman camp.
If it's winter (and COLD) where you are, find some twigs. Cut them up using a SHARP hobby knife. Make them look as if 25mm lumber jacks had chopped down the trees/twigs.
