Dragoons.

So as I understand it, dragoons are mounted infantry who dismount when fighting. I assume this is because it gives them more/effective firepower than let's say mounted arquebusiers. Also they are far more mobile than lets say light infantry like skirmishing arquebusiers. But to what purpose? I'm not sure I understand their effective role on the battlefield. Is it to quickly grab a piece of strategic terrain that mounted cannot hold? Any insights by you more seasoned P&S veterans would be appreciated.
Cheers
Alex

Dragoons are as you say mobile mounted infantry. They will not stand against regular horse but are useful in wearing down the enemy. A favoured tactic in the ECW was to use them to line hedges, giving them more protection and making them more difficult to dislodge. If I remember rightly they were used in several battles to line the hedges at right angles to the route of advancing enemy horse and would pepper them from the flank as they passed. They are also useful in providing fire support in a cavalry v cavalry action. A useful unit to have.

Thanks Doyley50. Interesting. Fire support makes sense to me. Too bad in skirmish mode I've never come across any hedgerows...

You must have been unlucky, they crop up fairly regularly in skirmish mode with the landscape set to agricultural.

IIRC you will only see hedgerows in the ECW module.

On the continent agriculture was (mostly) more open, so the map generator does not add hedgerows.

I play mostly ECW games, hadn't noticed the lack of hedgerows in other modules.
