Hi

Last night i found my opponent had marched up in column the
about turned with his cavalry.
I charged him with my arab HI - Whereupon he said he should
have been able to evade as he was facing away from me.
My reply was you can only evade in single rank - in the real world
the front of the column wouldnt see the charge and would sit there
while the rear dissolved in confusion
We fought it and i routed him
Was it correct - i am sure he could nt evade

Cavalry can indeed only evade if in a single RANK, not a single FILE.

You played this correctly. Your opponent should have made sure that if he was turning his back on the enemy that they were out of charge range or that his cavalry were in a single rank.
