My Odovacer and Theoderic multi-player series are now available for download from the in-game "Community" area. The five scenarios can be played individually, or they may be played as two separate "challenges" between the same two players.

To play the Odovacer "challenge", take it in turns to play as Odovacer and his Italian army and see if you can win the following four battles - Vienna 487AD, The Isonzo 489AD, Verona 489AD and The Adda 490AD and completely defeat Theoderic's invasion of Italy. This is harder to achieve than the Theoderic "challenge".

To play the Theoderic "challenge", take it in turns to play as Theoderic and his Ostrogothic army and see if you can win the following four battles - The River Vuk 488AD, The Isonzo 489AD, Verona 489AD and The Adda 490AD and emulate the achievements of the Ostrogothic king.

Design notes: The River Vuk 488AD

Very few precise details are known about this battle apart from the approximate location and the names of the generals of both armies. I have designed the battle as an attack on Theoderic's vanguard rather than the entire Ostrogothic, which most likely would have been considerably larger than what is depicted here. My assumption is that both armies would be fairly similar as both the Gepids and the Ostrogoths had long since moved from the steppe and settled as farmers in central Europe.

Either side may win the battle immediately by killing the enemy king.

The Ostrogoths were moving through the territory of Gepidia so some of the Gepids are hidden from them at the outset.

Army points for the Gepids is 1550 and for the Ostrogoths is 1883.

Design notes: Isonzo 489AD

Ostrogoths v Kingdom of Italy

Some of the Rugians, having been defeated by Odovacer a year earlier, now side with Theoderic against him.

Odovacer's hastily buily earthworks are represented by a simple ditch in this scenario.

Either side may win the battle immediately by killing the enemy king.

Army points for the Ostrogoths is 1665 and for Odovacer is 1390.

Design notes: Verona 489AD

Verona is a very similar scenario to the previous one in this series, Isonzo 489AD. Again, Odovacer has hastily built a defensive earthwork, but this time the river is at his back, and he decided to dismount most of his army.

Either side may win the battle immediately by killing the enemy king.

Army points for the Ostrogoths are 1665 and for Odovacer are 1375.

Design notes: the Adda 490AD

This was the last major set piece battle between Theoderic and Odovacer and I have represented it as a larger battle than the other two. Odovacer's fortunes had recovered somewhat since the battle at Verona a year earlier, and Theoderic had garnered the support of the Visigoths at this time. It is not known who the Visigothic commander was at this battle.

Either side can win the battle by killing the enemy king.

Army points for the Ostrogoths are 2159 and for Odovacer are 1971.
