If it were me I'd drop the Romanised infantry and instead buy a 6 stand BG of Thorakitai, another 12 stand pike, and switch out one archer LF for a javelin LF (very useful). Also unless noted specifically in the army lists BG need to have even numbers of bases. Thus the Cretans would be six stands. That should make the math balance for the suggested changes.

You are right on the money in buying two Xystophoi BGs--those will give Late Republican Romans (for instance) some real trouble.

personally i'm not so sure about losing the romans. i use two BG of 4 to support the flanks in my later selecuid, and they're gold.

i then also use the thorakitai for getting into the rough stuff, and only 1 BG of elephants. it pays to experiment.

I think the OP was using the romanised infantry in the ptolemaic list, not the legions which would correspond to your late seleucid argyraspids.

My assumption, too, given the number of pikes.

I like the revised list--the Elephants can support the flanks of the phalanx while the Thorikitai work further out on the wings, in reserve, or in terrain, depending upon the situation.
