How long did you last..

...on the GoT scenario The Hot Gates?
Those Immortals killed the majority of my troops :( , but I managed to hold the city until the 28th turn.

In the end just my two heroes were left, side by side, battering their archers. The archers eventually got bored of shooting and just ran at them...lol.

Those 2 guys kept fighting til the end. You could say they were very heroic...personally I think they were just stupid, hehe.

Hehe, I even imagined the dialogue as the 1st hero went down!:

"We must hold the city! They cannot be allowed to...uhhhh..."

*Demophilius is stabbed in the back by a cowardly Persian*

"Demophilius! Noooo!"

*Leonidas comes to the aid of his comrad, slaughtering anyone that gets in his way*

For some reason, everyone stops concentrating on them, allowing for a speech:

"Demophilius!"

"Leonidas...my friend..you...you have to keep fighting...for me...for the alliance...win this war...and avenge me!!"

"Demophilius! NOOOO! I will avenge you!!!!"

*Leonidas picks up his sword and heroically massacres all the enemy around him*

...Of course the fact that Leonidas died just 10 seconds after Demophilius is besides the point...

Good story

I managed to win this scenario a couple of times. It's great fun.

So everyone here just gave up after being told they'd managed to hold out for 20 turns?

Meh, you guys aren't true warriors :P

if you read the first post you wouldn't say what you said.

Trust me I've played that mission at least 12 times to no avail, its a tough campaign.

You can't do what you normally can in a normal campaign. You can't just go heal your troops after each battle.

lol kyle, I MADE the first post!

The objective is to defend the city for 20 turns. I was wondering if anyone else carried on defending the city after winning the scenario (basically clicking on continue instead of quit at the results screen).

I did, and managed to hold the city for another 8 turns more than I was supposed to. :D

well ....
i'm on my 50th round .....
i'm using impossible ...
dunno if there's any difference between impossible and easy ....

well .....
what i did is just simply take down one of the city
and you'll prob have 15 squads left
16 if your lucky

and then ...... with the artillery on the city wall .... plus some arragement on your troops
you can pretty much last as long as you want to

lmao, I didn't think of that..

Wonder if the cities are well defended...if you can keep 16 squads then probably not :)

What do you mean some arrangement of your troops?

Well .... to take down one of the citie ....
you need to attack em as early as possible ...
2nd round or something i think .....
after taking it down ....
you need to check if there's the city wall in that city ....
cuz you know ..... once you take down the city .....
it destroy some the facilities within the city

after that ....
if you prefer to fight the following battles. ....
what you need to do is to arrange your troops ... so that they will not get destroyed .....
the best arrangement .... is simply put all the troops as close as you can ... to the wall ....
and put the ones that's heavily damaged (say .... 8 troops left)
next to one that's not hurt ..... and place em around the corner .....

well .....
it's kinda stupid wanting to fight those battle by hand ...
cuz ..... how the computer takes a battle ..... is by its "power" ....
and .... since most of the troops are elite hoplites (well .... such as spartiates and so on....)
their power is pretty high ...
and with the city wall ......
city wall adds quite a bit of battle power to your troops

all you need to do ... is .... press....
auto-resolve.... ha
and you can last over 200 turns with that auto-resolve .....
well ....

this means .....
the only thing you need to do .... is to control the first battle by hand ... (the battle taking down the city)
and the rest .... with "auto-resolve"
i guess my instructions are fairly easy?
haha

so

in the demo, I think the highest rank I saw any unit get was about 11, does it go higher in the full-game?

uh ....
i thought the highest is 12
which is around 1700 or 1800 experience....
don't really remember .... ha

Well, in the \data directory, there's a file named experience.txt, but it's a bit cryptic.

Basically the leftmost column, labelled "points" is the total experience to make that level. But the first row, with "points" of 49, is actually level 2, since completely untrained units start at level 1.

Therefore, since the file lists 13 ranks, and the first is level 2, it would stand to reason that the highest possible rank is 14.

But I confess I have no idea what the rest of the columns mean. How about one of you clever lads go have a look and we'll discuss it? :)

Interested in how a society could become so powerful without talking, I looked up the word laconic. It actually means "characteristically blunt speech". I would like to submit the two leaders were in a particularly talkative mood that day :)

Also, it was only my attempt at some light humour, no more history lessons please, get enough of them at college!

I thought it was funny :)

And the Spartans talked, they just used language as a functional tool, for conveying information.

The Athenians, by contrast, often played with words, using them more as a toy than a tool.

Demosthenes, FFS, sometimes wrote orations for both sides in a legal case.
