Principate Romans - Cavalry - An anomaly?

Was just considering an Early Imperial Army, when I noticed an issue concerning Cavalry;

Auxiliary Cavalry are compulsory, so a minimum of 4 before 260AD or a minimum of 6 after 260AD.
Well, ok, they're not horrible, being Superior & Armoured Light Spear & Mtd. Swordsmen.

But the maximum for _any_ Mounted, be it Cav, Light Horse or Cataphracts is 4 Pre-206AD, or Post-260 AD is 8.

And since the minimum sized BG for any other Mounted is 4, this restricts any Roman Cavalry to Auxilary Cav. And that's it. So there's a choice of Auxilary Cavalry , or Auxiliary Cavalry.

Um, so why are the other Mounted on this List again? :?

The maximum for Cav, Light Horse or Cataphracts graded as Superior is 4 pre-260 and 8 post-260, not any. Top of page 10. This leaves room to use Average troops up to the remaining allowed base totals.

I'm glad to help--and that I wasn't mistaken in my reply. I penciled out any number of illegal Condotta armies before I got that list figured out :oops:
