rear support clarification

here's something that came up at the club today.
you have a BG of 12 pike in combat.
to the rear of that pike you have enough bases to offer rear support (and they're the right grade, in range). BUT, the supporting elements aren't facing the same direction as the pikes. they are facing 90 degrees away. their front edge and the rest of the battle group is however directly behind the pikes.
the wording of the the relevant section in the rules is:
"the supported battle group must be at least party in front of a straight line extending the front edge of the supporting bases"
to clarify, this means that you draw a line through the front edge of the supporting bases, and the pike BG would be supported if they were at least party across this line?
