not only is it a design choice, it also makes sense, as recon don't and hardly ever capture anything in any battle or war zone, as it's not there role, it's recon,...

Reconnaissance by default is,

Recon is an intelligence asset,

forward observation, not combat troops, no staying power, as first mission is survival and withdraw with intel intact.

eye's and ear's of a combat team, so depending on strength / size etc, just won't have any way of securing a objective with a small sized team, never mind holding it.

recon's job is to go and gather and not be seen and or engage in combat.

capture implies holding where size matters, eg personnel and supplies and the firepower to etc etc, something no recon units ever have in the field or would be used for.

Because that's how the game is...? I'm assuming you mean they should be able to like in PzC, but it's an OOB design choice that they shouldn't be able to. Makes sense to me as they are simulated to be small/mobile units given that they also flee quickly.

Thanks Zak for the explanation ...

Yes in PzC recce units can capture objectives and I think I remember in WWII that Belgrade was captured by a waffen SS officer and a handful of men
so I was just curious as to why they couldn't in OOB but your explanation makes sense

Not all units capture points. There's a "fleeting presence" trait on some units that prevents them that.

May be unrealistic, but is sound as a game mechanic. If you want to advance in territory, you have to field proper infantry (and/or armor) and push them in their pace.

Plus, plus, plus, very important: In OOB, unlike PzC, supply lines are crucial and were recon units able to capture hexes what would happen is players would be sending these fast units behind the lines all the time to cut off supply instead of doing their real job of reconnaissance. Believe me, it's bad enough when the AI sends a tank or something to do that but look, you have to guard your supply lines in OOB! But if speedy recon units could cut off supply, the game would degenerate into monkey rodeo in my opinion.

Bru brings up good points, as someone who has transitioned from PC it took a little getting used too.
But I have made my peace with it and am really starting to get into OOB now, I had to lay a lot of my PC play style to rest.

I'm still in the process of trying to understand OOB as compared to PzC and it is takin' some gettin' used too for sure
