Principate Roman Legionary Lanciarii

Can someone give me an idea what these troops are and what miniatures would work for them?
From what I gather they are either a higher rank of Legionary or light troops.

Ah well, there you are. Answer is we don't really know.
About the only thing we do know is that they appear to have been armed with a number of lancea or similar and they were probably, as you suggest, a higher grade of legionarii.
After that it rather becomes speculation ...
