Support Shooting Impact Phase

A superior medium unprotected Battle Group of eight bases of Bow armed foot is about to be contacted by a Battle Group of Gauls. The Bow armed infantry have a Troop Commander in the front rank. As the Gaul close frontaly the rear rank of four bows will add to the "combat dice" p 98.

The Gaul roll eight dice 22334455 = 4 hits.

The Medium foot bow roll 1245 for the front rank = 2 hits and 1 re-roll;
Their second rank of support shooters roll 1236 = 1 hit and 1 reroll or 1 hit and 2 rerolls.

I believe it is the first - 1 hit and 1 reroll for being superior. The 2 that was rolled is not rerolled as the attached Troop Commander does not effect dice of / for Support Shooting In The Impact Phase.

Please advice how this should be?

The general applies for quality re-rolls for the support shooting.

If you have a look in the Rules sub-forum there was something on this a couple of weeks ago IIRC.

The key point is that close combat is any combat in the impact or melee phase - see definition in the glossary.

Why did the MF only roll four dice for impact combat - they should be rolling 2 per base, the same as the Gauls.

The bow should roll 8 dice for the front rank hitting on 5s and re-rolling 1s and 2s. The support shooting is 4 dice on top of that at the same odds. Also, the Gaul should have 4 hits there. I'm assuming this is Gaul warriors who have impact foot ability.

I think Carlos means the Gauls score 6 hits out of the 8 dice. The Gauls are Impact Foot so come in at ++ but the Bow have no impact phase weapon to counteract that, so the Gauls hit on 3 or more. The Bow are -- so their 8 dice hit on 5s and 6s, rerolling 1s and 2s. Four rear rank bow shoot, also needing 5s or 6s and also rerolling 1s and 2s, so the Bow get 12 dice altogether.

Assuming the Bow roll 11224455 1236, they get 3 hits and 6 rerolls, so all is not quite lost!
