Developing (military) initiative

Hello all.
After buying Panzer Corps, playing the (free) tutorial for Order of Battle, and after regretting not having bought more Slitherine games in the last Steam sale, I'm trying to step up my strategic and tactical game, theoretically. On the subrredit r/MilitaryStrategy (at https://www.reddit.com/r/MilitaryStrate ... r_dummies/), I've asked for some pointers, with some degree of interesting replies, and literature suggestions.
I'm here to ask you: what about the development of military initiative - the art of having the opponent react to you and not the other way around -, where can I read more about it? Exercise it? By all means, I'm an armchair general, far away from anything military or sports related, so I may only crawl out of the ignorance hole via study.
edit: the damned link
