Question regarding Terrain types

Hi, I have a somehow simple question(s) about the terrain types, and how they influence the outcome of battle. I have now completed The Pacific and Rising Sun, and I am on my last mission in Morning Sun, so perhaps it is a bit late to ask this - but hopefully I can learn something for the next campaigns...
The case is that I am not certain if certain terrain types are best for me and my units or the enemy - although I can see the numbers when moving around, I am still afraid that I miss out on something - And it feels like there is SO much else also to take notice of and remember in this game.
I know that all units in rivers are bad - very bad - but would it be good for me to place infantry units in cities or forest or on hills or mountains, if I am defending myself - or does it help the attacker more? So, should I place myself in these places, or is it better to lure the enemy into a forest, and then attack from a plain terrain? And what about the other kinds of units? Is cavalry and tanks best on plain terrain?
I don't quite understand how to use the artillery units yet - they never seem to add any damage to the enemy. Are they better if the enemy is in a forest or a city, or are they worse?
I know it is quite a lot to ask, but I realize I have so many questions still...
I really love this game, and I hope someone will perhaps give me a little advice on how to use the units... Thanks!!
