Rough terrain with no Medium Infantry

I am playing Galatians (63BC to 25 BC). The battlefield consists almost exclusively of rough terrain. How do I fill out my army and what tactics do I pursue?

For those who aren't familiar with the Late Antiquity Galatian army, it has a very limited menu of troops. There are two primary types of Heavy Infantry (Average Warbands and Average Imitation Legions) and two types of Heavy Cavalry (Superior Noble and Superior Armored Noble). The only non-heavy units I can choose in a Medium-sized scenario is three Light Barbarian Javelineers.

Any suggestions or thoughts on how to deal with a situation like this? Or do I just grin and bear it and hope my Warbands can overcome any non-heavy troops they encounter in the Rough Terrain?

Just use loose order warbands so they dont' get disordered in rough. They usually come in a lovely green outfit for some camouflage benefit as well.

Loose order warbands? I did not see them as an option in the selection menu. Or is it just a different formation for the warbands (like square for pikes)?

There should be close order warbands and loose order warbands. Loose is much better for rough terrain. I don't know that army list you have so they might not offer both types.

Gauls do, Galatians don't.

So the question stands. Grin and bear it?

Stay in the bits of the map that are not rough terrain.

The Galatians are a very strong army in good terrain. There has to be a down-side. You have found it.

Interesting insights Richard, thanks!

To be perfectly honest, on first glance the Galatian army appears to be pretty ordinary. Impact Foot is good, but the Warbands are Average quality and have no Armor. I guess the size of the warbands also works well in grinding opponents down.

Of course, I really should avoid making judgements until I actually play a few games with the Galatians. I will let you know how the strategy works.

True. I was thinking of the earlier Galatian list.

Yes. The earlier Galatian army is quite imposing. Later Galatian army, not so much....
