Welcome to FoG Chris ! :)

I am afraid I cant help you with regards to your army selection but I can say xyston miniatures are very nice and if you need me too I can readily recommend a particular brand of GLUE you can use to assemble them with

cheers

Bob old boy

Thank goodness you reminded me as I was wondering what to use, my other glues just don't cut it these days !

Army opinion still required ;-)

As a starting army it isn't bad. You may find yourself wanting another BG of cavalry but the list you have posted is not shabby.

Hello Chris, I'm deeply envious of someone who can contemplate painting an army in a month...

re the army I'm far from an expert but a few views.

The four cretans might be too few. I've seen them used efectively in large BGs though.

What role do you see for the Indian foot? if it's in the main battle line that might be a problem (a weak unit that wants to stand off and shoot but most of the rest want to get stuck in).

Two groups of nellies is nice but fragile. I think I'd prefer another block of solid foot myself.

Regards

Graham

I initially thought that the Indian foot could be a weak point but in conjunction with 2 BGs of Thracians they may give a significant edge in any terrain fight. MF bow are not the easiest troops to start with but they do add another type to the army which as a new player may be a good or bad thing.

The Indian MF, if average, can provide rear support to the 2 large pike blocks at little risk to themselves, and if both of those go you may have more to worry about than losing a BG of indians.

Graham, try Picts in 2 weeks 8)

thanks for the replies i'll post with a bit more substance later.
As far as bumping the Cretans go, problem solved as I have sold myself 22 points short !

What year are you running? Are you fielding Alexander as the IC?

I would max out the Hypastists, and run the other pikes in units of 8. A single unit of shock cav, with only one unit of LH is going to be easy to overwhelm. I would suggest running a unit of companions and a unit of Agema, or if you want to save points get the Thess cavalry.

Medium foot is fun, but if you are going to fight stuff with it get drilled (I believe there are some drilled medium foot offensive spear in that list). Thracian's look great, but being undrilled hurts if you actually want to move around.

I would drop at least one unit of the thracians, the indian bow and the elephants and get more solid, drilled troops that would have been present in Alexander's army. Drilled is by far the most underpriced thing in the game.

Thats very close to the army I used at Britcon I posted it earlier under the Alexandrian Macedonian thread, yours I think is slightly illegal ,There are 4 compulsary Thracian LH,I managed 8 Indians in my list although they were they to keep shooty cav away, something you shouldn't see many of at Roll Call but as others say they do have their uses especially with the elephants
