Would it be possible to allow the player to substitute his own names for leaders and units in the deployment phase? While not affecting gameplay this would allow greater identification with one's own forces and establish a stronger identity for units in campaigns, enabling the performance of individual commanders and units to be more closely followed from battle to battle.

You may regret it. In Battle Brothers I change names and my guys still die, often horribly or even quicker or both!

The next major update will include the facility to name units in campaigns. These names will then persist through the campaign as long as the unit continues to exist.
