StuG IV

Looking at the longer term I'd like to know if you can upgrade a StuG IIIB to a StuG IV? A couple of posts said that the IV is in the anti-tank line and the IIIB is in the artillery line so I'm not sure that you can make that switch. If you can't, what's the upgrade path for the IIIB?
Thanks for any info.

The StuG3B's Upgrade path is the StuH38 and then the Brumbar. I for one do not like these upgrades and so have continued to use just StuG3B's as their lowcist helps keep soft cap inline and nothing beats that 110% ROF.

I have 4 in my West path, and 5 in my East playthrough.

Please consult the upgrade chart, pictured here http://www.slitherine.com/forum/viewtop ... hs#p597036 for this type of question.

The StuG3B's Upgrade path is the StuH38 and then the Brumbar.
And now something completely different

In the section "Unnecessary knowledge in Foreign Languages that makes you you look like a Smart Person"

Today the meaning of the Word Brummbär or if don't know how to type the ä Letter the Brummbaer

A Bär or a Baer is you might have guessed it a BEAR

Brumm is the sound a Bear is known for and while there is no exact Translation the word GRUMBLE or GROUCH fits it

So a Brummbär is a Grumble Bear

which might be something like this Fellow
Image

or even this Cutie which makes a Brumm sound when poked in the Belly (Disclaimer don't do that with the other fellow shown above !)
Image

A Brummbär is also a Slang word for a Grumpy Person which is best reflected in the Fact that one of the Dwarfs from the Classic Disney Movie Snow White named Grumpy
Image
is named Brummbär in the German Language Lip Sync Version

Funny Side Fact

The actual Nickname Brummbär of the Tank stems from Allied intelligence as German Troops called that Thing Stupa which is of course a Contraction of the Word Sturmpanzer

That said I really like the Stug IV

It is not much of an AntiTank Killer (about the same as a Stug III F) by the Time it is available, but it is switchable to an Arty Unit with a Soft Attack of 7 and a Hard Attack of 10, sports a 2 Range ability with the same 110 RoF as a Stug III b has a much better Ground Defense of 15 (compared to the Stug IIIb) and comes in at a handy Price Tag of 347. I think it makes the Stug III B obsolete despite the Lower Ammo of just 6 and is certainly worth a thought or 2 for probably the same Role and a lot better multi purpose performance as a Finisher of weakened Tanks in AT Mode

Give it a try and you won't be disappointed especially not in close combat Roles as a backup Arty in late 45 scenarios

Its rate of fire is terrible in comparison.
edit: rof 110%? the last time I looked it was really low - did i have a dodgy equipment file at the time?

just looked and rof=80%, like being hit with a marshmallow

Other guys have covered the upgrade thing but I might as well toss this pic of the Stug Family into the playpen for good measure, note the Stug IV and StugH 42 can be bought/upgraded in the Arty AND AT categories.
Inset- As we know, some of them have got special capabilities (circled) namely bunker-killing capabilities (bk) and some can switch the elevation of their guns and ammo types (sw) for use in either the arty or AT role.
I'm still testing the Family to see what they can do when strutting their stuff against various targets and structures etc to find out if they're good or not-so-good value for money compared to tanks, and will post my findings in the PzCorps forum in due course..:)

With "switch" ability problem solved.

ALL StuG (Sturm Geschütz) are class 4 Artillery (primary).
Switchable to AT (class 3).

Irrespective of the type chassis (Pz III/IV/VI) or Cannon (75 short/long-105-150-380).

Simple. Doable.

I did it in my e-file

Thanks, and in the meantime can you or anybody else tell me the difference between the Stug IIIA and the Stug IIIB, because their stats look exactly the same as far as I can see, or am I missing something?

PS- just to clarify, all my comments and tests refer only to vanilla Pz Corps Gold straight out of the box without any mods or tweaks, I might try a few mods later this year perhaps.

The only difference is that the IIIA is available 3 months earlier, but you also can't purchase it. I don't remember, but I assume it was in a scenario as an auxiliary unit during the Grand Campaign or maybe used somewhere on the German side in Allied Corps?

Thanks, and another thing I should mention is that I'm not heavily into Campaign play at the moment, I've dabbled in the Camps but don't yet fully understand their structuring, so I play mostly stock standalone scenarios and my own created scens.
PS- I'd better start a new thread entitled 'The Stug Family' to avoid cluttering up this thread of Stormbringers..:)

No you can't. The B is in the Artillery class so you can only upgrade it to something else in the Arty class like a towed gun or self-propelled job or the StuH42.
The StuH42 is the only other Stug in the Arty class and you can upgrade to it starting from November 1942.
I just started a 'Stug Family' thread here which might interest you-
