Best Army by Book

I got my copy of Eternal Empires today. Scanned through it and now, having figured out the best part of the rules, can only think about Catalan or Later Polish. But what is the best army in each book. Some are obvious dogs. Some will not work in an open competition. But by book is a different matter.

For me

Eternal Empire
Catalan
Swords and scimitars
Post latin Conquest Byzantine
Legions Triumphant
Picts
Immortal Fire
Bactrian Greek
Storm of Arrows
I really don't know
Rise of Rome
Later Seleucid

but then these are all for 800pts. And they are all for my style of play.

What do you see in the picts?

For Storm of Arrows....
#1 Medieval French - 800 points of hoofed fury. or you can add in some Later Medieval Scots [Continental] allies for a bit more HF or MF/Longbow power as needed.
#2 100-Year English [Continental]

For Swords and Scimitars....
Later Crusaders - teamed with some Syrian States, Fatimid or Bedouin allies to deal with those pesky LH/bow.

What are your favs?

When I faced it the main feature was lots of big BGs. 12 BGs of 8 bases and some light horse. A BG of 8 averae offensive spear for 48 points can't really be sniffed at, not when you have 8 to 10 of them.

If they do not disrupt at impact they fight at no worse than even against everything else in the book. (Except the Kushan Pike)

For me its the following in the books I own
Rise of Rome
Late Republican Roman
Like the armored, superior impact foot supported by a decent menu of MF auxilia, some decent cav and LH, and a fair choice of allies, and I like the way this army plays
Immortal Fire
Indo-Greek
May seem an odd choice to some, but I've really come to like the combination of classic Indian with some drilled Greek elements. This is an aggressive army that can do well in terrain.
Legions Triumphant
Dominate Roman.
A classic.
Storm of Arrows
Italian Condotta
I like the large numbers of drilled Knights with plenty of LF missile support and a possible decent corp of HF pike and billmen.

My copy of Eternal Empire is shortly en route. Don't have any crusader era armies at this point so I don't own S&S.

Cheers,

Dale

For me:

Rise of Rome: Later Carthage
Storm of Arrows: Later Medieval Swedish
Immortal Fire: Later Achamenid Persian

And I have not started any other armies yet.

One of the things I like most about FoG is that there are so many viable armies. In DBM (a game I did very well in) it was very easy to dismiss army after army for tournament play. I think choosing "the best" armies in FoG is a much bigger challenge.

In the Feudal Book (Oath of Fealty).

Rebase hordes? in the berber army?

When is "Oath" due out? I don't see it on the list.

Thanks,

Sword and Scimmitars

Middle Serbain List (Have lost only two out of countless games)

Eternal Empire

Late Medieval Serbs (yet to be tested, but I love those Light horse Lancers)

Edit:

Rise and Fall

Now that I have my hands on this book (Which I seriously think is the best fo them all) my best army list will have to be Early Slavs. Easy list but with all the right type of troops to handle any situation.

Surely the best army in Storm of Arrows should be Later Swiss ?

On a related note....
Years ago there was a series of articles in the US based wargame magazine "Courier" in which the various armies for WRG 6th/7th edition was reviewed and pros and cons of each (in the opinion of that particular author of course!) were given.
It may be a bit cheeky of me, but I have given thought to producing something similar for FoG. It might make for a good web site or blog.

Thoughts?

Go for it. Opinions are the fodder of lists such as this. You'll have us flapping our gums for months.

Revived to ask:

Now that we have Wolves/Blood/Beagles/decline/Oath/Empires what are people's thoughts?

Wolves - Norse Irish or Viking
B&G likely that aztec will be popular, maybe mayan or chanca. Inca in mountains?
STB - alexandrian macedonian
D&F - Dailami or Nikephorian
OOF - later sicilian i suspect
Empires - Tibetan

Within theme or in open tournament?

If within theme, then the extra points you spend on Tibetan cataphracts will not be well spent, because there are so many HW and crossbows in the theme
