Some battlegroups get temporary upgrades to quality during the impact phase. Rules state:

"Some battlegroups can gain a temporary upgrade in quality during the impact phase only".

So presumably average troops that have been upgraded can no longer count rear support from average troops behind in the impact phase as they aren't of sufficient quality? Have I got that right?

I don't believe that is the intent and the rules are fairly clear. Page 22 - "are only upgraded as superior when resolving hits..."

Correct - they continue to receive rear support from average (or better) troops.
