Newbie stuff

Is there a way to disband the units? I've just started the Polish campaign and I have two light anti aircraft units in the reserve. I guess they won't be very useful, so I'd gladly get rid of them and buy something else instead.

OK, I've found the disband button. I see I can recover only some small portion of the cash. Is that correct?

Also, I've read that the artillery doesn't provide defensive support, is that correct?

Yes, if it's a core unit, you should be able to click the "i" button in its information panel and then choose "Disband." You then get a refund of resources and command points.

Sorry, I had to run and did not notice your follow up until now. Yes, that PzKw 38(t) A which I used as an example normally costs 70 and in the situation which I used as an example, it will only refund 14. I'm not sure if that is standard or it depends on the scenario and situation.

To answer your other question, only AT and AA provide defensive support, not regular artillery. This makes even more sense now that they have limited the efficiency of artillery in terms of being used repeatedly in consecutive turns; i.e., they need to "cool down the barrels" for a turn to bring them back up to maximum efficiency. If artillery was firing in defense as well as offense, this would not makes sense.

Actually, it seems to be 20% standard refund, if the PzKw 38(t) A and these two other examples are indicative. Note that you can get a 100% refund as long as you cash in a newly-purchased unit in before placing it on the map (click the "$" button) but once it's on the map, it seems that you get only 20% resources back.

Thank you for the exhaustive replies! As to the lack of arty defensive support, I'm ok with it. Given the state of WW2 technology, it was very difficult to coordinate the effective support, so the artillery was mostly used for the pre-planned barrages. Well almost, because during the later stages of war, US forces using the time on target fire, were able for example to obliterate with artillery the Das Reich Division's assault in the Ardennes. I guess it's supposed that the mortars are already included in the defensive capabilities of the units.

OK, I got two more questions.

1. Is there a way to see the current unit efficiency as a numerical value? I know that the current unit efficiency is reflected by the color of the unit strength number, but is there any chart where I can see the exact efficiency number of the unit?

2. Is the unit amo unlimited?

1. Yes. Efficiency is the value in the bottom right corner of a unit's stats (looks like a battery).

2. Yes.

Hello All:

I'm new to OOB, playing the U.S. Marines scenario and the Boot Camp Campaign repeatedly to feel out the AI. When I'm through beating up the Japanese, I'll be off to the Battle of Britain or maybe the eastern front... at any rate:

Efficiency can seem bizarre and complicated at first but it's totally simple.

Talking about enemy efficiency levels: it may be helpful to note that the enemy efficiency number doesn't change on the display unless the player cursors off of the enemy unit and then cursors back onto the enemy unit; i.e. if you make an attack and leave the cursor on the enemy unit, the efficiency number displayed does not change in real time with combat. You must cursor off and then back on to the enemy unit to see the effect on efficiency.

Welcome. Two things:

1) Battle of Britain is broken in 5.2.3. We are hoping that it will be restored in the next patch.

2) The importance of efficiency cannot be overstated. Many new players overlook efficiency - what causes it to decline, what happens when it does, how does it recover - and they get their butts kicked accordingly.

I'm an OOB newb, and efficiency ratings were one of the first things I knew I had to ask for help to understand. The little quirk I mentioned above led me to believe that none of my 'softening' tactics were doing anything to enemy efficiency, and I de-valued artillery, mortar and offshore bombardment, et cetera. (I would pound a target and its efficiency would remain at 10.) Not to mention that I started thinking I wasn't going to like OOB as much as I thought I was going to.

I think that putting an efficiency rating into a game of this genre is awesome--having artillery bombardment modify a combat efficiency rating is a more accurate reflection of what barrages actually accomplish in battle. It's much more realistic and satisfying than having artillery just do some damage. Kudos to the devs.
