Banners

In my Milvian Bridge scenario I'd like the Constantine Army - side 1 - to use red banners with the chi-ro sign for the generals' units (the smaller unit flags are too fiddly).

As it stands the two sides are using blue banners (Constantine, side 1) and red banners (Maxentius, side 0), the ones with the Roman wreaths at the bottom.

I've found the red icons in Banners, copied that that to Data/Battle/Banners/ added the chi-ro symbol and renamed it Side 1 (i.e. Constantine), but no effect.

Is there some sort of USE_BANNER_ string I should be adding to the Text file?

Yohoho.

Hi Odenathus,

I don't quite understand some of the things you have said here, which actually might explain where you are going wrong.

First off, the two banners in the "Roman" set are Red, with a sculpture bust for generals (not a wreath), and Green (not Blue).

To be able to advise you I will need to know what sidenumbers you are using for the two armies in this scenario?

Also, when you say "renamed it Side 1", what exactly did you name the banner that you edited?

cheers

Paul

I will leave this to Paul as he seems to have it in hand, but I am watching with interest.

Thanks for replying, just recovering from the jolly festivities.

For Milvian Bridge I copied my Mantinea, which has two sets of banners, red with a golden eagle clutching a snake and a wreath at the bottom, and blue ditto. As it turns out Constantine's army (side 1) gets the blue and Maxentius' (side 0) the red.

Ideally I'd like Constantine's army to have red banners, with the generals' ones showing the Chi-Ro insignia. I located the red banners in the Banner folder, added a Chi-Ro to the generals' standards, and saved it in Milvian Bridge as Data/Battle/Banners/UnitFlags_01.Diffuse@ I thought this would lead to those appearing for Army 1 (Constantine's), but it hasn't. If that worked I was going to change Maxentius' to blue using Data/Battle/Banners/UnitFlags_00.Diffuse@. as they're Army 0.

Does that make any more sense? To be honest it's just a small piece of chrome, it doesn't affect the scenario in any way.

The reason they have those banners is because of the SideIDs. If you change the side IDs you will change the banner used.

Your Mantinea uses the Greek banners (naturally) not the Roman ones.

I am not sure that the engine will find modded banners in custom folders. If it does, you might also need the Normal and Spec textures.

But you have modded the wrong texture anyway, because your Mantinea uses the Greek red banners, which are UnitFlags_06. UnitFlags_00 is the Roman red banner, and UnitFlags_01 is the Roman green banner.

Yes, I thought you must have been using Greek/Hellenistic/Italian sideIDs, rather than the Roman.

You say that Constantine is using the Greek Blue banners, so that is UnitFlags_07_Diffuse@.dds. You just need to repaint that, as you have done, and put it in your custom Data/Battle/Banners folder. It does work in there.

Maxentius is using the Greek Red banners, so that is UnitFlags_06_Diffuse@.dds. Again, just repaint it as you wish, and put it in the Data/Battle/Banners folder.

Got it now, thanks again to both of you.
