Another review, pretty average, but they seem to like it overall http://www.wargamer.com/reviews/legion_arena/

Yeah, I played MP against the guy that was writing this for Wargamer.

He was, ummm, sort of biased against the game, I thought. Some of his comments to me made me feel that he wasn't, ahh, how to say this...

It was as if he was not going to allow himself to be impressed as much as the game deserves, in my opinion.

Sort of like - "I'm a cynical, tough-minded game reviewer. I've been playing wargames since before Gary Gygax hit puberty. Nothing impresses me."

LOL, having said this, I sure as hell hope it wasn't The Colonel (Bill Trotter) in disguise. I mean...he actually HAS been playing wargames since before Gygax had hair on his stones!

(Historical Note for the Younger Generation - Gary Gygax was the founder of Tactical Studies Rules (TSR), and co-writer of the original Dungeons & Dragons some 30+ years ago. I believe TSR somehow morphed into Wizards of the Coast...)

Not impressed by the review either. It's just like he hadn't gone very far in the campaign.

And when he says: "Combat often seems to collapse into chaotic scrums in the middle of the battlefield" I wonder what kind of wargamer he is cos that never happens to me.

So...how many times did you win?

I wasn't going at him full speed. I don't go at any "new" member of the online community full speed until I have played them a few times. I don't think being raped in one's first online match encourages one to stick around. The one exception here is Sumn1won. I knew from the start that he was a highly formidable opponent, and did my utmost against him.

But as I recall, I won the match against that reviewer guy, yeah. Heh, I don't even recall his username now...

BTW, what is a "scrum"? Is that a british sports term? It sounds like it means what we would call a dogpile...

I try not to be too mean to new players as well, but if they make the same mistakes after I tell them to fix it, then I go for a more demonstrative approach
. Or if they are just rude- like a fellow who told me half my units were useless, that I was a noob, and then he turtled in a corner of the map the whole time I mean, I can respect a guy who retreats off in over in a corner to give himself a chance of winning, but somebody whos tactics are utterly static- and then calls my maneveuring stupid...

i thought i'd try and be helpful: here is a scrum in pictorial form

http://www.nickjenkins.net/pictures/rug ... 01_std.jpg

usually the heavier guys in the team (AKA "the pack") are the ones who take part, I was always a winger myself, too skinny for scrumming, but i can run pretty fast 8)

In spanish it is called "mel?©e", as in french  We don't play rugby, but we know where the quality is! :P :P

...anyway, I always support Scotland, even when they lost against Italy :(

Dear All,
Some time ago I wrote to or rather emailed Wargamer Magazine regarding the disproportionate way credits are handed out regarding new games. I pointed out that it appeared that the highest percentages went to the bigger advertiser's games which of course was rebuffed by the editor. This was when RTW came out and declared the greatest wargame ever. I commented on the errors and bugs against the smooth running gameplay of Legion which gained almost or nothing worthwhile in mention. I was assured that there was no bias whatsoever and have since noticed a change, even a slight change, in their attitude to game analysis. However having been around business for many years I find it quite inconceivable to be totally impartial when large amounts of money are at stake. If Slitherine was one of the largest companies, I speak in monetary terms, I'm sure the plaudits would be louder.
Long live Legion,
Yours,
Ross.

That makes sense

That happens on all commercial sites as far as I can tell. The more you spend the better your review. They're not going to say an awful game is great, but if you've got two good games & one has a marketing budget you know who will get teh better review. It's just a fact of life unfortunately :(
