I do like the Romans in FoG II, I must admit. But historically... Well, whatever the Romans "done for us" you have to admit they were a bit dull. I'm currently reading a history of Caesar's campaigns in Gaul, and it's reminded me of why I dislike them so much - they were, basically, the Manchester United of the classical world...

I don't get that. As a Scouser I know that United are garbage. Thats just a fact.

But the Romans had cool armour and everything! And, more importantly given how cold our house currently is, central heating! They rocked!

Well, the central heating goes without saying. And the roads.

To continue the football analogy though, they just seemed to grind out results didn't they? Not much flair, not much excitement, just a relentless machine approach that guaranteed success but didn't make for interesting viewing...

I think it would have been fascinating to watch. The closest emulation to Ancient warfare is arguably Riot police vs protesters and the encounter gets violent.

This is a S Korean riot police drill on YouTube and it looks insane. Note how flexible they are in terms of open and closed formations as well as their tactical wedges that slice through protester lines to isolate and cut off small segments.

Bit OT, but:

We can never be sure how much this modern stuff relates to the past, but I was fascinated by the footage from Kiev a few years back. Before the shooting started, both sides were armed with shields, hand weapons, and armor, with a smattering of missile weapons; rocks, molotov cocktails, rubber bullets, and the like. There were long periods when the two sides stayed in rock and insult range, and then one side, led by a group of their bravest, would charge forward. The other side would either fall back, or they would beat each other for a little while before separating again. The police were well trained; many of the protesters were organized into companies and had undergone rudimentary training, at least. Obviously, these were real people getting hurt, and that's terrible, but the footage did make me wonder if we were getting a real glimpse into the past of the crowd psychology of ancient battle.

Fascinating. But, I imagine anything approaching that level of training in the ancient world would be reserved for 'disciplined' troops in FOG II.
