So, mounted troops with Lance or light spear get an upgrade to superior if two ranks deep.

So if they are in three ranks then presumably they don't get this upgrade.

Read the rules. P134

Done that. Even read that bit. So you are saying that the BG can be in any number of ranks as long as there is half or more of the bases in the second rank as front rank.

If the BG was three ranks deep then the second rank would have 100% of bases in the second rank and would therefore count.

Just checking :)

And the formation rules on P20 say that only the rear rank may be incomplete. It's not "half or more" it's "more than half"

So just to help clarify my own understanding - an 8 base BG of undrilled average impact foot deployed 3 bases wide would count all 3 bases as Superior at impact?

Well that is interesting. I had not interpreted it that way. Makes things a bit more interesting.

It's defined in the glossary Chris. P134.

As an aside, there was a debate when developing the rules as to whether this should be on a file by file basis - i.e. a three deep warband file would count superior but a two deep one from the same BG would not. That was discarded as unduly fiddly.

Makes sense, Pete and Graham. Still playing through the changes. Thanks for the insight.
